Your outdoor space offers endless possibilities for enjoyment — that is, until it rains or gets too hot. A backyard is a little taste of the outdoors where you can enjoy fresh air, greenery, and good company. However, it can sit unused for long periods when the outside conditions are too harsh.

There are plenty of ways to prepare your outdoor space for any weather so you can enjoy it all year long. You don't even need to go outside to enjoy it.

1.   Start With the Basics

Before considering big renovation projects and outdoor structures, you should start with the basics. Your outdoor flooring, lighting, and furniture should all be weatherproof so you can better enjoy your backyard.

Flooring

When creating your outdoor space, choose hardy and versatile flooring that can withstand any weather. There are plenty of choices out there — you can pick concrete, tile, natural stone, or composite materials. Concrete is popular because it's sturdy, inexpensive, and low maintenance.

Lighting

Lighting can set the right mood for your outdoor spaces, but you must invest in weatherproof fixtures if you want them to last. There are plenty of options in lighting, from classic sconces to more rustic string lights. Whatever you decide, make sure it’s something that can withstand the changing seasons.

Furniture

Choosing the right furniture is one of the most important steps to creating a functional outdoor space. Ideally, pick pieces that can handle the weather. The best material for outdoor furniture is hardwood like teak and white oak. You can also opt for poly or wood-plastic composite furniture. Additionally, there are weatherproof options like steel or aluminum. Just remember that metal can get pretty hot in the summer.

2.   Install Awnings and Covers

One great way to protect your outdoor areas from the weather is to cover them. Being in direct sunlight can cause the temperature to feel 10–15° Fahrenheit higher, making those hot days unbearable. Adding awnings or other protective elements can help you enjoy your outdoor space, rain or shine.

Awnings

An awning is a covering typically made with waterproof fabrics. One side is attached to the wall, while the other hangs over a space. You can install an awning over outdoor areas like decks and patios. With an awning, you can enjoy shade and protection from the rain when you’re outside.

Roofing

You can take an awning a step further by installing a roof over your outdoor space. Some opt for metal roofing, while some go for Plexiglass.

Parasols

Parasols are a great addition to your outdoor space, as they’re perfect for protecting you against less intense weather. Installing them over tables and furniture can protect you from the hot sun or light rains, giving you more chances to hang out outside. Parasols can be a great aesthetic choice, too.

3.   Enclose Your Deck or Patio

For many homes, the deck or patio is the main outdoor area where people gather. But not all of them are weatherproof. When it rains or snows, they can be left unusable. One way to continue using your outside space all year round is to enclose it.

You can enclose the sides using screens, which will help prevent debris and bugs from coming in. If you're willing to splurge, get retractable glass doors you can open or close depending on the weather.

4.   Bring the Outdoors In

There are other ways to enjoy the outdoors from within the comfort of your home. Bringing the outdoors in through windows and clever use of space can help you appreciate the beauty of the outside across all seasons.

One good example would be a reading nook. Choose a small corner of your home with a large window and create a space with a comfortable chair and some bookshelves. Add in some personal touches and you have yourself a reading nook. You can sit down and relax even when it’s raining. The view from the window can make you feel like you’re outside, but you’re safe and warm inside.

If you're going for a full renovation project, you can go for something that extends your indoor living space outdoors. For instance, an extended kitchen with large windows can help you feel more connected to the outdoors while cooking inside your home.

A popular home extension is a sunroom or a solarium. Sunrooms are almost all glass — there’s a basic frame, but everything from the sliding doors to the roof is glass. It’s a gorgeous space to lounge and gather while appreciating the views outside.

You can also choose to create an extension based on your needs. Do you need a home office? Have you always wanted a home gym or a play area for the kids? An extended space with a great view can help you enjoy the outdoors while staying indoors.

5.   Create an Outdoor Fireplace

Fireplaces aren’t meant for year-round use but are a great way to enjoy the outdoors during colder months. You can place an electric fireplace near your outdoor sitting area to add warmth to the space.

If you’re more traditional, you can install a fire pit instead and surround it with chairs and tables. It may become the focal point of your backyard. Enjoy the warmth, some hot cocoa, and good conversation together.

6.   Build Outdoor Structures

Free-standing structures are a great addition to your backyard. They offer a communal space protected from the elements, so you can gather with friends and family any time you want. They are often beautiful too, which helps tie the look of your outdoor space together.

Just consider the weather in your area before installing one. For instance, if your location is known for strong winds, you should anchor structures down adequately. You might also need permits if your city requires them.

Here are some great ideas if you’re considering outdoor structures:

  • Pergola: A pergola is a free-standing structure with an open roof and is a common addition to outdoor spaces. Vertical posts or pillars support the slatted roof. Pergolas often cover walkways or sitting areas, providing essential shade during the summer.

  • Ramada: A ramada or a pavilion is similar to a pergola but has a closed roof. They’re often used to cover outdoor kitchens or recreational areas.

  • Gazebo: A gazebo is another free-standing structure you can install in your backyard. It typically has a roof and is octagonal in shape.

  • Greenhouse: If you’re the gardening type, a greenhouse is perfect for you. You can protect your plants while continuing your hobby throughout the seasons.

Enjoy Your Outdoor Space All Year Round

Your outdoor space is an extension of your home. Enjoy hanging out in your yard just as much as you enjoy staying inside by creating functional areas for all seasons. Whether diving into a renovation project or simply choosing furniture, you can find ways to enjoy your backyard.
